Old Grand-Dad 114, a bourbon bearing the iconic name of Basil Hayden, is a powerhouse in the world of “value” and “cheap” bourbon hunters. Renowned for its high proof and distinctive high-rye mash bill, this bourbon has garnered a dedicated following among enthusiasts seeking a cheap, bold and flavorful experience.

Upon nosing, the bourbon presents several of aromas. Caramel and vanilla take center, classic bourbon nose. Beneath the sweetness, there's a subtle spiciness, a nod to the higher rye content in the mash bill. Oak notes add some depth, not super complex, but it tries.
The initial burst of sweetness, very much brown sugar and toffee, is accompanied by a robust warmth that quickly blankets the palate. The high proof is evident, yet decently balanced, allowing the flavors to unfold gradually. The rye spice asserts itself, adding a layer of complexity that keeps it somewhat interesting.
As the bourbon progresses across the palate, the spiciness becomes more pronounced. A subtle hint of cinnamon emerges , creating a dynamic interplay between sweetness and spice. The mouthfeel is full-bodied and satisfying, a testament to the Jim Beam process.
Old Grand-Dad 114's finish is long and lingering. The Kentucky hug persists, accompanied by a combination of sweet and spicy notes. Oak tannins make an appearance, adding a touch of dryness.
Old Grand-Dad 114 is decent bourbon. Most chase it looking for the “Best of the bottom shelf.” Its not the most complex, its not the greatest. But for those that think Basil Hayden is great bourbon, OGD114 is probably something you covet as well. For the rest of us, its fine. I think it goes for around 30 bucks. There are several others that I would choose over this at that price level, but if you have a collection, this should be in it. - Casey
